Barge solution to reconnect SA’s north-east
Livestock SA has welcomed the commitment from Federal and State Governments for further targeted disaster assistance for producers and communities in the state’s north-east, including the construction of a temporary barge for the Cooper Creek Crossing.
Livestock SA Chair Gillian Fennell said the new commitment under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) was the result of months of collaborative work between Livestock SA and government.
“This issue was raised with Livestock SA some months ago and we took it to government to ensure they were aware of the importance of reliable access for the pastoral community in the north-east of the state,” Ms Fennell said.
“We also welcome the Primary Producer Recovery Grants of up to $75,000 and Community Grants that have been triggered by the DRFA that will help cover the costs of clean-up, repairs and rebuilding.”
The Birdsville Track is a critical freight route for the movement of tens of thousands of head of cattle during the season, and without an operational crossing, businesses across the region were facing serious economic impacts.
“Pastoralists are not just remote landholders. They are an integral part of the national red meat supply chain and regional economy. Without a barge, businesses across the region would face serious losses and communities would be left isolated for months,” Ms Fennell said.
“The new modular barge will enable semi-trailers and other essential vehicles to cross the floodwaters, maintaining connectivity for freight, community supplies and tourism, while road infrastructure is assessed and repaired.”
“We thank the Premier, Minister for Emergency Services Emily Bourke, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Tom Koutsantonis, Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Clare Scriven, and their offices and departments for working with us to deliver a solution that will benefit our members and the broader community in the far north.”
