Investment Priority 1: Maintaining market access and securing new markets

NLIS Cattle Compliance Program

Service Provider: Department of Primary Industries and Regions SA

Summary: The NLIS Cattle Program supports the South Australian cattle industry by monitoring and enforcing compliance with cattle identification and traceability requirements for the purpose of disease control, food safety and market access.

Benefits to Industry: PIRSA is required to monitor and enforce compliance with National  Livestock Traceability Performance Standards which include timeframes for tracing animals quickly and reliably in the event of an emergency animal disease incident. 

Investment Priority 2: Efficient and sustainable production

SA Biosecurity Extension

Service Provider: Livestock SA 

Summary: The South Australian Livestock Biosecurity Extension Project (SALBEP) is a vital initiative designed to strengthen biosecurity preparedness, disease prevention, and animal welfare outcomes across the South Australian livestock sector. 

Benefits to Industry: SALBEP equips producers with tools to prevent, manage, and respond to biosecurity threats, strengthening resilience, protecting animal health, and safeguarding market access. Targeted training, workshops, and communication initiatives drive best-practice adoption, reducing disease risks and improving productivity.

Investment Priority 3: Business management and skills development

SA Junior Heifer Expo

Service Provider: SA Junior Heifer Expo Organising Committee

Summary: Established in 1985, the SA Junior Heifer Expo educates and inspires youth through hands-on experience and career opportunities in the beef industry. It connects participants with passionate mentors, building skills, confidence, and long-term engagement in Australian beef production. 

Benefits to Industry: With 195 entrants last year, the Expo offers SA youth valuable exposure to the beef industry, supporting the SA Red Meat & Wool Blueprint. It fosters career pathways, learning, and innovation while building knowledge of the supply chain, biosecurity, market standards, and best practices in welfare, health, and breeding.

Adelaide University Meat Judging Team

Service Provider: Adelaide University 

Summary: Adelaide University’s Intercollegiate Meat Judging (ICMJ) Program provides tertiary students with hands on exposure to the beef production and processing industries while developing technical capability in carcase assessment, yield evaluation, and meat quality analysis. 

Benefits to Industry: The ICMJ program supports the development of future professionals who understand the complexities of the modern beef supply chain.

Growing Beef Industry Leaders

Service Provider: Women Together Learning 

Summary: The aim of the project is to provide a leadership pathway for two woman who are currently involved in the South Australian cattle industry, by providing an opportunity for them to receive a scholarship for the Stepping into Leadership program. 

Benefits to Industry: The project builds leadership capability within the South Australian beef industry by supporting women to take on greater industry, business and community leadership roles. It strengthens decision-making capacity, industry participation and professional networks, contributing to a more skilled, connected and resilient beef industry.

Investment Priority 4: Advocacy

SA Beef Cattle Industry Development

Service Provider: Livestock SA

Summary: To provide strategic leadership, industry representation and policy advocacy that supports a profitable, sustainable and resilient South Australian cattle industry. The project drives industry development, coordinates stakeholder collaboration and ensures effective management of the SA Cattle Industry Fund on behalf of beef cattle producers.

Benefits to Industry: Supports advocacy and representation on issues affecting cattle producers, including biosecurity, animal health and welfare, market access, land use, drought resilience and industry sustainability. Enables strategic leadership and collaboration across the beef value chain, facilitates industry engagement with government and key stakeholders, and ensures the effective governance and administration of the SA Cattle Industry Fund to meet legislative requirements and industry expectations.

At Call Fund 

Service Provider: Livestock SA

Summary: A flexible funding mechanism that enables timely investment in emerging priorities, strategic opportunities and unforeseen issues affecting South Australian cattle producers outside the annual funding round. Any unspent funds are returned to the Cattle Industry Fund at the end of the financial year. 

Benefits to Industry: Provides the industry with the agility to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities, support high-value projects that fall outside standard funding cycles, and ensure the Cattle Industry Fund remains responsive to producer and industry needs throughout the year.

Small Project Fund

Service Provider: Livestock SA

Summary: A pre-approved funding pool that supports the delivery of smaller projects and activities that provide direct benefits to South Australia's beef industry. Any unspent funds are returned to the Cattle Industry Fund at the end of the financial year. 

Benefits to Industry: Provides an efficient mechanism for funding low-cost, high-value initiatives that deliver practical benefits to cattle producers, support industry development and enable timely action on emerging priorities.
