Livestock SA has welcomed the opening of the Cooper Creek Barge as a vital reconnection for freight, livestock, and communities across outback South Australia.
After months of advocacy and collaboration with government, the new barge capable of carrying A-Double truck configurations marks a major milestone for the state’s pastoral industry, reconnecting producers and regional businesses who were cut off following record flooding in the north-east earlier this year.
Livestock SA CEO Travis Tobin said the project is a clear example of how government and industry working together can deliver lasting solutions for regional South Australia.
“Our members raised this issue with us, and we took it to government to ensure the importance of reliable access for the pastoral community was understood,” Mr Tobin said.
“Producers in the northeast of the state are an integral part of South Australia’s red meat supply chain and regional economy.”
“Without this barge, pastoralists and other businesses across the region would have faced serious losses, and communities would have been left isolated for months.”
“This investment secures the supply of quality South Australian cattle from the region into our southern processing facilities, supporting jobs in the meat processing industry.”
Mr Tobin said the new barge is also a reminder of the resilience of regional communities and the importance of long-term investment in our freight routes. “The Cooper Creek Barge is more than a transport fix, it’s a symbol of commitment to the people who keep the state’s beef industry running.”
“We thank the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development, and the Premier’s Office for working with us and our members to deliver a solution to benefit the broader community of the far north.”
The barge’s operation will ensure continued access for freight, livestock, and essential goods while road restoration works continue across flood-affected regions.
An online booking platform is available on the South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport website which will allow livestock owners and other barge users to select a timed slot for passage. Information on availability, cost and terms of service are also available on this page.
