This event "TAKE A BREATHER 'will consist of a BBQ followed by 3 guest speakers:
- David Zielonka who will talk about the challenges he faced walking the Kokoda trail and learning to live a healthy and fit lifestyle.
- Terry Ledgard is a former SAS medic & author who served in Afghanistan and recently climbed Mt Everest, his story is one that will be inspirational and addresses the issues faced and what he’s achieved since.
-Our last speaker is yet to be confirmed but both our options will touch on mental health and their journey overcoming rock bottom where suicide was contemplated (our first two speakers are volunteering their time (but our last speaker will come at a small cost of $2000).
At this event we will be launching the Wilmington Community Men’s Walking Group (as part of the Fat Farmers initiative) where early every Wednesday morning men will meet at our coffee shop, head off for a walk then return for a coffee and chat before starting their day. We predict that this group will consist mostly of those aged from 50+ and the first challenge will be walking the Kokoda Trail distance over the weeks. In addition, we will be introducing a Men’s only PT session (also part of the Fat Farmers initiative) at the Wilmington Community Gym at 7am on Monday which will be run by a qualified PT. We predict this will consist of men aged 25+. Both of these initiatives in addition to our current Fat Farmers self-workouts at the gym on Wednesday’s afternoons will bring a new enthusiasm and healthy campaign to the men in our district both mentally and physically.
Other support for the event at this stage includes:
• Fat Farmers providing stall and BBQ trailer.
• Representative from Rural Business Support for farmers unsure of where to go to get help for whatever they need.
• Personal Trainer Joel Riding in attendance to provide information to those wanting to participate in the fitness session
• Local Fat Farmers Men will provide the information on the Walking Group and its launch
